About the Language :

Bengali is an Indo-Aryan language spoken primarily in the East Indian subcontinent. It evolved from Pali, Magadhi Prakrit, and Sanskrit. Bengali is the national language of Bangladesh and one of India's 23 official languages.

History of the Language :

Since the first millennium BCE, priests in Bengal have used Sanskrit. However, the locals speak a variety of Prakriti languages. These languages were coined "eastern variation of Magadhi Prakriti." However, the language spoken by Bengalis at the time was too different from Magadhi Prakrit. It was dubbed "Purbo Magadhi Prakriti" and it contained more non-Indo Aryan words. It was later proposed that Purbo Magadhi Prakriti (as defined by Shahidullah) contained many Dravidian and Austro-Asian words. Bengal was the center of Sanskrit literature during the Gupta Empire. When Bengal was a part of the Magadha Realm in the first millennium, the Middle Indo-Aryan dialects were influential. These dialects were known as Magadhi Prakrit.

Origin of the Language :

Originated from Sanskrit, Bengali has been ranked the sweetest of all languages in the world. Modern Standard Bengali in Bangladesh's official and de facto national language (Literary Bengali). It is the nation's lingua franca, with 98 percent of Bangladeshis speaking Bengali (including dialects) as their first language. Bengali is the official language of West Bengal, Tripura, and the Barak Valley in Assam in India. It is also spoken in various parts of Assam's Brahmaputra Valley. It is also the most widely spoken language in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal and is spoken by significant minorities in other states such as Jharkhand, Bihar, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Odisha. Bengali is commonly ranked as the sixth most spoken language in the world, with approximately 250–300 million total speakers.
