Course Overview
About the Language :
Italian is spoken by the larger part living in Italy by around 66 million individuals. Elsewhere in Italy, Italian vernaculars have been impressively impacted by contact with different dialects. Introductory compositions in Italy were written in vernaculars of the language that just later became standard Italian.
History of the Language :
The Italian language came into existence from Latin, very much like other Romance dialects like Spanish, Catalan, Portuguese, French, Romanian, and other minority dialects (Occitan, Provençal, Galician, Ladin, and Friulan). Latin also influenced other languages spoken by European populations giving rise to new neo-Latin languages (Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Romanian). With the ruin of the Roman Empire, while in Rome people continued to speak Latin as a cultured language, in other parts of Italy the vulgar languages spoken by the people developed.
Origin of the Language :
The official and most widely spoken language across Italy is Italian, which originated as the medieval Tuscan of Florence. In parallel, many Italians also communicate in one of the local languages, most of which, like Tuscan, are indigenous evolutions of Vulgar Latin. Of the indigenous languages, twelve are officially recognized as spoken by linguistic minorities: Albanian, Catalan, German, Greek, Slovene, Croatian, French, Franco Provençal, Friulian, Ladin, Occitan, and Sardinian; at the present moment, the last name is regarded as the largest of such groups with approximately one million speakers, even though the Sardophone community is overall declining.
