Course Overview

About the Language :

Finnish Finland has substantial Finnish-talking populaces in Florida, Ontario, Michigan, and Minnesota since it is not just the authority language of Finland, yet in addition one of the European Union's true languages.

History of the Language :

The Finnish language dates back more than 3000 years. The earliest written form of Finnish dates to 1450, which is surprisingly late in the game for a major language. During the domination of Sweden, Finnish took on many Swedish words and other characteristics - modern Finnish still has these "Swedish" features. Finland didn't have a strong national identity until the 19th century. In 1892 Finnish was adopted as the official language of Finland. Today there are about 6,000,000 Finnish speakers in the world and 2 major Finnish dialects. One dialect, Meankieli, is spoken by Finns who were annexed by Russia in 1809.

Origin of the Language :

Finnish Suomi, a member of the Uralic language family's Finno-Ugric group, is spoken in Finland. Finnish had no official status at the beginning of the 19th century, with Swedish being used in Finnish education, government, and literature. In 1835 sparked Finnish national pride with the publication of the Kalevala, a national epic poem based on Finnish folklore. Finnish gradually became the dominant language in government and education over the next century, and it was granted official status in 1863. Both Finnish and Swedish were designated national languages in Finland's 1919 constitution. Finnish is a Finno-Ugric language belonging to the Baltic-Finnic branch, closely related to Estonian, Livonian, Votic, Karelian, Veps, and Ingrian. Vowel harmony, in which vowels are divided into groups, is a distinguishing phonological feature.
