It is a tonal as well as analytic language similar to Vietnamese and Chinese Language. As a dominant language in all aspects in Society of Thailand, Thai was gradually adopted as second language by the non-native speaker of Thailand since the time of mid- late Ayutthaya period.

History of the Language :

According to a source from China, during the Ming Dynasty, Yingya Shenglan, Ma Huan in the 15 th century, reported on the language of Hsien Lo, that it somewhat resembles, the local patois, as pronounced in Kuang tung province. Since then Thai has undergone through some historical changes and most significant changes have occurred during the evolution of Old Thai to Modern Thai. There is two way distinction voice vs. voiceless distinction of consonants, and upto a four year distinction of fricative and sonorate consonants and this is a four-way distinction among affricates and stops. The maximum four ways occurred in dentals and labials.

Origin of the Language :

The major changes occur between old and new Thai was due to voicing distinction losses and concomitment tone split. These have happened between about 1300 and 1600 CE. They are possibly occurring in different times at different times in different times in different parts of the Thai speaking area. All voiced and voiceless distinction: Plain voiced stops become voiceless aspirated stops, Voiceless sonorants became voiced, and Voiced fricatives becomes voiceless. Later formal distinction of voice was turned into a total new set of tonal distinction. Old Thai has now split into two tones, the lower pitched tone which corresponding to a syllable which formerly began with voiced consonants and a higher pitched tone corresponding to a syllable that formerly began with a voiceless consonant (including glottalised stops).
