About The Language :
Spanish is one of the easiest languages to learn for native English speakers. It is the official language of 18 American countries as well as of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, along with Spain in Europe and Equatorial Guinea in Africa.
History of the Language :
In the 13th century, Alfonso X the Wise brought about the standardization of Spanish (when Castilian became the language of government); it probably originated with the dialect of Toledo's upper classes. Throughout the rest of the middle ages, aspects associated with Castilian Hispano-Latin-based patterns spread west and east to Leon and Aragon as well because of the prestige the Kingdom of Castile achieved in the peninsular context and the lesser development of the vernacular forms. Following the arrival of Amerindian languages in the Caribbean and Central Andean regions, Spanish became heavily influenced by these languages.
Origin of the Language :
About 5000 years ago, native settlers inhabited Spain and the Iberian Peninsula. A number of vernaculars developed from Proto-Indo-European languages in the region known as Hispanic (Spain) including Vasco (Basque), Cántabrón (Cantabrian), and Celt*bero (Celtiberian). In 218 BC, when the Roman Empire conquered Hispania, they imposed their cultural practices on the native population of the Iberian Peninsula. Throughout Hispania, common Latin eventually replaced several Proto-Indo-European languages.
